General Membership meeting

The Doxsee Legacy: Growing Up in a Fishing and Clamming Family

Long Island’s waters once provided clams to over 60 percent of the country. The Doxsee Sea Clam Company, founded shortly after the Civil War by Islip resident James Harvey Doxsee, was at the forefront for nearly 150 years. Please join the Bayport-Blue Point Heritage Association in welcoming Bob Doxsee, Jr., who will chronicle the Doxsee family’s contributions to the region’s farming, fishing, and clamming industries. All are welcome to attend.

Troop 329 helps at Meadow Croft

The BBPHA had the privilege of working with some awesome Boy Scouts this past weekend. One of the boys from Troop 329 needed volunteer hours while working on his “Life Scout” badge (the step before Eagle Scout). About eight boys from this troop helped out by cleaning and organizing the Carriage House and Auto Barn at Meadow Croft. The boys are always willing and ready to help out and volunteer their time. We appreciate the dedication and hard work for this endeavor. Thank you boys!

Once again, the BBPHA will be putting on a Holiday extravaganza as we celebrate the 12 Days of Christmas!

Mark your calendars for December 1st & December 2nd, 12:00-4:00 on both days.

Meadow Croft will be beautifully decorated by generous donations from local organizations and businesses, and our very own elves. You can listen to Christmas music being played on the original Roosevelt family piano as you tour the rooms all decked out for the holilday. Many of the decorations and festive baskets will be raffled off at the end of the event so don't forget to but your raffle tickets! Winner need not be present.

This year the carriage house will be transformed into St Nick's workshop and will feature jolly old St Nick himself along with his sleigh. There will be hot cocoa and cookies too. Pictures with St Nick will be available for purchase and a wonderful train set-up will be on display with other surprises as well! Be sure to visit the main house first to receive you pass to St Nick's workshop!

Also new this year will be a special night time Christmas tour of Meadow Croft!
Tickets will be sold separately and are for adults only. You are invited to join us on Saturday night December 1st, from 7:00-9:00, where we will serve wine and cheese and you will have a private guided tour of Meadow Croft. See this beautiful home all aglow and ready for Christmas and learn it's history and the details of John Ellis Roosevelt and his family that lived here during the turn of the century. Tickets will be $20 per person and a limited number of tickets will be available.

Volunteers are still needed and if you have something to donate or period decorations to share, please call Leanne Berg at 631-235-1702.

Five Mile Look, Blue Point

Last month, the first steps were taken in what will undoubtably be a very long journey to reclaim land for recreational use for the residents of Blue Point. The Heritage Board and the President of the Blue Point Community Coalition, Jason Borowski, met with Councilman Foley and Legislator Lindsay to discuss the potential project at the former site of Avery's 5 Mile Look. The site is located at the end of Blue Point Ave. to the west side of the fishing pier. The property, now over grown, hides the grandeur of it's former life, but does give subtle clues like the remnants of the ornate stone wall that ran along the property line. The project would entail elevated walkways, similar to those found in the sunken forest, through the property which is NYS wetlands, including an elevated platform for bird and nature watching adjacent to Stillman's Creek. The area around the creek discharge would potentially get some relief via removal of invasive species and replacement with native plantings. In a nod not only to the property's history, but the history of Blue Point as a seaside recreation town, the stone fence would be reconstructed and we are hoping maybe even the fountain on the property would be brought back to life. Councilman Foley, Legislator Lindsay, and Assemblyman Garbarino will all be reaching out to the DEC to get the ball rolling on what will be, without a doubt, the hardest hurdle we have to clear, obtaining DEC approval for the project. Thanks to The Blue Point Community Coalition for working with us on this project. We know this will be a lengthy process, but it is a project we are very excited for and we are in it for the duration.

The Life and Legend of John K. Hackett, Long Island's Pistol-Packing Judge.

Forgotten now but a hero and celebrity during the 1800's, John K. Hackett was many things: a kid from Queens, son of a famous Shakespearean actor, an avid hunter and fisherman, a Forty-Niner, a practical joker and the deadliest pistol shot of his day. One of the founders of the Southside Sportsmen’s Club, he had a deep love for Long Island’s natural landscape. He also had a reputation as an upright judge during the dark days of Boss Tweed’s Tammany Hall. This talk will take you through the colorful, violent and surprising story of his life and times, from the seedy New York underworld to the raucous life of the Long Island sportsman. We will also track Hackett’s rise and fall, and look at why he and his era have been forgotten by history.


Please help us welcome Chris Kretz for this fascinating presentation. Chris is a librarian and co-author of Oakdale by Arcadia Press. Along with Connie Currie, Chris hosts the entertaining and informative podcast The Long Island History Project.

Historical Scavenger Hunt

As you may have heard, our annual House Tour was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances with securing historic homes. As disappointed as everyone was, our Vice President Leanne Berg has come up with a wonderful Autumnal Activity for our whole community to enjoy!

Introducing.....a Historical Scavenger Hunt!

On Saturday October 27th, or a rain date of October 28th, the BBPHA will host a Historical Scavenger Hunt through our hamlets. Registration will begin at Meadow Croft at 12:00 and each participant or family will receive an envelope with 9 clues to guide you to various historical locations in Bayport and Blue Point. Once you have discovered the location based on the clues, a volunteer will present you with a special token to show that you have visited the site. The final location will bring you back to Meadow Croft where participant prizes will be awarded. Once back at Meadow Croft, there will be pumpkin decorating, raffle baskets, apple cider, cookies for all to enjoy, and more!

Please note: there will be a small fee of $5.00 to participate. This is NOT a timed event so please drive carefully through our community. The day will end at 3:00. For more information or if you would like to volunteer, please call Leanne Berg at 631-235-1702.

There is something for everyone as St Nicholas will be on hand to take photos, piano music will be played on the Roosevelt piano and more!

637 Middle Road- This Old House

What a shame! Another old Bayport house will probably succumb to the wrecking ball at some point in the near future or fall down upon itself. The home at 637 Middle Road is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sanford who have owned it since 1979. The home is on the north side of Middle Road and has a 3 feet high picket fence in front.
The home has a storied past. The BBP Heritage Association archives revealed information on past owners and in 1979, the NYS Division of Historic Preservation conducted a building structure inventory on the residence. The inventory describes the building built before 1858 as a wood-frame house with interlocking joints and clapboard siding. Additionally, there is an old gable roof board and batten barn with a gable on the front and sawtooth decoration.

The house belonged to Mr. Edmond Weeks in 1858. The Weeks family is among Bayport's earliest. Silas Mapes owned the home after Edmund Weeks until 1883. In 1883, the home was purchased by Lieutenant Charles W. Hayes who had been renting the home in the summers for several years. Lt. Hayes named the home "Heart Ease." In 1888, Lt. Hayes sold the home to Wilson R. Smith who sold it to A. L Atherton of New York city in 1915. In the 1920's, the home was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Arthur A. Hoefler. The Hoefler's grandson, Mr. E. Bond lived there for a sometime in the thirties. Mr. Bond had written to the BBPHA in 1997 to share some memories and inquire as to the status of the house. The Hoefler's sold the home to Mr. Engerling in 1946 and the Sanford's (current owners) bought it in 1979.

The Town of Islip has intervened several times in an attempt to clean up the property. It is presumed that the Sanford's are current on the taxes and the home is not considered abandoned although it certainly looks that way. We hope this house can be saved by someone. It was a beautiful structure and one of Bayport's earliest.

2018 House Tour Cancelled

2018 House Tour Cancelled

Dear Members and Friends,

We regret to inform you that this year's house tour scheduled for October 21st 2018 has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances with several of the tour homes. The BBPHA committee worked tirelessly securing homes, gathering specific details to describe the homes, organizing an extensive list of volunteers, working with local papers to advertise and promote, assigning antique cars to be part of the day and countless other duties to make this day a success. But unfortunately, in order to have a successful event we need the stars of the show; those incredible, magnificent homes of Bayport and Blue Point to showcase the rich history, unusual architecture or fascinating home renovations found in our community. So, when committed hosts cancel or change their minds at the 11th hour, we must cancel the tour.

We would like to thank all who gave countless hours to prepare for this event or who committed themselves in one way or another. It truly is a group effort to make an event like this a success. Please disregard any advertisements and share with friends who look forward to this tour every year.The BBPHA will assess this event for the future.

September 2018 Newsletter

General Membership meeting

 

Please join us for our first general membership meeting of the season on  
September 9th 
 from 2:00-4:00 at the BBP Library.
Our program will feature, direct from across the pond, Mr. Tom Love of Islip, Northamptonshire, England - the namesake of our fair town.

Tom is a former Islip Town councilman and has made numerous visits to Islip NY USA in this capacity. Likewise, several former Islip Town elected officials have visited Islip, England and have been able to see first hand the historic St. Nicholas Church (pictured below) which features a cross dating back to 1226. They were also able to view the Nine Arches Bridge, and Washington House, the birthplace of George Washington's mother.

Tom will share the connections of the two townships named Islip. Tom is a delightful speaker and we look forward to this interesting lecture! We hope to see you there!

31st Annual Autumn House Tour

The BBPHA has sponsored an Autumn House Tour showcasing the beautiful homes of residents in both Bayport and Blue Point for 31 years. This year is no exception! We already have commitments from our neighbors and friends for 6 homes which will make this years tour outstanding! The date of the tour will be  
Sunday, October 21st, 1pm to 5pm
and tickets will be available by September 23rd.

Learn about local history and view 6 lovely historic homes. Meadow Croft will be serving refreshments and tours of this home will be available.

Please note that out of respect for the homeowners, children under 12, high heels, food or drink, and cameras will not be permitted. Tickets are on sale for $ 30.00 and can be purchased at Bayport Flower Houses, BBP Library and Century 21 Bay's Edge Realty on Main Street in Sayville. The tour will start at 1:00 and end at 5:00. There are a limited number of tickets so purchase them early so you will not miss out. Looking forward to another wonderful BBPHA event!

Summer concerts

A special Thank You to BBPHA board member Dave Harenberg for setting up our two free summer concerts this year. In July, the community was treated to the elegant sounds of J. K. Hodge playing his piano at Bayport Memorial Park. It was a great crowd and a beautiful night! We followed this concert with another FREE concert in August featuring, Soundswell. The crowd was singing and dancing as they enjoyed another great band. Thank you to all of our friends in the community who came out to join us for these FREE events!

The Sayville Yacht Club

Nestled on the shores of the Great South Bay in Blue Point is the Sayville Yacht Club. From land or water, it is always a gorgeous summer sight to see the sailboats gliding along the bay in front of the club.

But the age-old questions is - why is the Sayville Yacht Club in Blue Point? Founded 117 years ago, by some familiar names - Post, Suydam, and John Ellis Roosevelt, it was called Southside Yacht Club. The first Commodore was John E. Roosevelt of the Meadow Croft Estate and meetings were held at his home. About 1910 the club became more aligned with Sayville when John E. Roosevelt's cousin President Teddy Roosevelt would race with Southside Yacht Club at the foot of Foster Avenue in Sayville. During WWII the club was officially incorporated under the name Sayville Yacht Club (SYC). Lispendard Suydam of Blue Point in 1957 offered SYC a great deal of a piece of property on Boylan Lane where the present-day club resides.

August 2018 Newsletter!

Moonlight Cruise

On July 26th 2018, over 70 people enjoyed a spectacular moonlight cruise along the south shore featuring the historic homes and properties located in Blue Point, Bayport and Sayville. The weather cooperated and the sunset and full moon were luminescent! Frank Geibfried and John Amato were the tour guides for this event and did a fantastic job. They shared the histories and intricacies of these lovely houses and facts about the area along the shore. The Sayville Ferry provided the perfect vantage point to see all the action. There was a pit stop at the Snapper Inn where everyone enjoyed some time for libations and socializing. The BBPHA is thankful to all who came out and supported our historical organization.

Free Concert in the Park

Once again, BBPHA will provide a FREE concert in the park featuring Soundswell!

On Thursday night August 9th from 6:00-8:00 at Bayport Memorial Park located on Middle Road, the band Soundswell will play a free concert. Soundswell is a local 9 piece band that plays original music as well as covers from other artists. They have a bluesy, reggae, surfer-vibe that's great for dancing or clapping along. so bring your lawn chairs, some food, beverages, and bug spray. To get a preview, click here. The Heirloom Garden at MC

Our master garden volunteer, Anne Soper has done a phenomenal job and has created a gorgeous and fruitful garden at Meadow Croft. Lorraine is meticulous and tends to the garden almost daily. As the crops become ready for picking, she donates all proceeds to the Sayville Food Pantry on behalf of the BBPHA. Thank you Anne for your efforts!

Autumn House Tour

Our annual Autumn Historic House Tour is held in October each year and it is never too early to start planning! This is a wonderful opportunity to view some magnificent, historical, unusual or architectural significant homes in the Bayport Blue Point community. It is also a huge undertaking and our biggest fundraiser so we can continue to provide free activities to our communities and upkeep of the Meadow Croft Estate. If you have a home that you would like to consider for the tour or would like to help in any way, please contact us at our information provided below.

A few reminders:

Meadow Croft House Tours: Historic tours of the Roosevelt Estate are happening every weekend from now through October. The times are 2:00-4:00 on Saturday and Sunday. See how life was in the early 1900's as you experience a guided tour with a trained docent. Always something new to see and learn!

Camp Tabat display: A wonderful display of memorabilia from the local Camp Tabot is currently on display at Meadow Croft. Camp Tabot was a children's camp located at the end of Boylan Lane in Blue Point and was in operation during the 40's, 50's and 60's. Come on down to MC and check it out!

Thanks JK Hodge: On July 12th, the BBPHA provided our first FREE summer concert featuring JK Hodge and friends. It was a beautiful night, great music and a good time was had by all. Thanks to Board member Dave Harenberg who organizes our summer concerts.

Historic Moonlight Cruise: July 26th, 2018

Reminder: The historic moonlight cruise is filling up quickly so send your checks in as soon as possible. You can send them to Bayport Blue Point Heritage Association, PO Box 4, Bayport, NY 11705. 

To make it easier, we also now have a PayPal or credit card option by clicking here. 

This is a wonderful fun night on the Great South Bay! Bring your friends or neighbors! Tickets are $30.00 per person. We will be launching on Thursday, July 26, 2018 from the Sayville Fire Island Ferry terminal on Brown's River and heading out to the Great South Bay leaving at 6:00 PM. You must be on the ferry by 5:45 so don't be late!

Please have your money in to secure your spot, as we have until July 11th to secure the needed 55 seats or the cruise will be cancelled.

We will cruise out to the bay as John Amato and Frank Geibfreid team up to highlight the historic sites along the shore in Bayport and Blue Point. The boat will then head up the Connetquot River and make a stop at the Snapper Inn for cocktails. We will head back to Brown's River under a beautiful full moon and dock at approximately 9:30. Cocktails at the Snapper are on your own. You are allowed to bring some food/snacks in a cooler on the ferry (no alcohol). Cruisers will park at the Sayville Ferry freight parking lot free of charge. July 2018 Newsletter

NEW NAME!

It is with pleasure and pride that we announce that The Bayport Heritage Association has merged with our neighbors in Blue Point to form the Bayport Blue Point Heritage Association. The two communities have been closely connected through history in so many ways, so after many discussions, the decision was made by the executive board to merge the communities to make one association. Since the association is chartered by the NYS Department of Education as an educational entity, there was some paperwork to do to officially change the name and add Blue Point. Historic Plaque marker

On June 9th 2018, the BBPHA placed a historical marker at the William B. Arthur building at 293 Bayport Ave. The building is currently owned by the law firm of Bruce Vetri and Joseph LaCapra. It was a beautiful morning and the executive board and a small group of visitors were on hand to witness the unveiling. John Amato made the presentation which begun with how the building came to Bayport from Blue Point Ave. moved by a team of horses which pulled the building along Montauk Highway, which was then called the South Country Road in the year 1869. William B. Arthur ran a general store, became the first post master and was a ticket agent for the South Side Rail Road, which later became the Long Island Railroad. We are pleased with how the project turned out. Please stop and take a look at the marker on your way up or down Bayport Ave.

4th graders visit Meadow Croft

On a beautiful spring day under sunny skies, 75 students and their teachers from Academy Street Elementary School in the BBP School district walked to Meadow Croft. They were met by trained docents who divided up the group and shared the rich history of John Ellis Roosevelt's summer home. Students loved the tour and marveled that President Teddy Roosevelt visited his cousin and the property on horseback all the way from Oyster Bay. They had lots of questions and returned to Academy Street with a new found respect for a piece of local history, found right in our own backyard.

Concert in the Park

The BBPHA loves to give back to our community where we live and because of that reason we are planning a FREE concert in the park! This evening concert will feature JK Hodge, a local Bayporter who plays the piano. JK and his band will perform this concert on July 12th 2018 from 6:00-8:00 at Bayport Memorial Park right on Middle Road. Bring your lawn chair and bug spray, something to eat or drink and get ready to enjoy some great music with a fun crowd! FREE! Hope to see you there.

Boat Cruise

The moonlight cruise on the bay is back by popular demand and will be launching on Thursday, July 26, 2018. We are pleased to bring back the historic cruise which ran for many years leaving from the Sayville ferry terminal on Brown's River and heading out to the Great South Bay. The cruise will leave from the Fire Island ferry terminal at 6:00 PM and head out to the bay. You must be on the ferry by 5:45.

If you have not sent in your money to secure your spot, please do so as we have until July 11th to secure the needed 55 seats or the cruise will be cancelled.

Cruise will begin from the Sayville Ferry dock on Brown's River. We will cruise out to the bay as John Amato and Frank Geibfreid team up to highlight the historic sites along the shore in Bayport and Blue Point. The boat will then head up the Connetquot River and make a stop at the Snapper Inn for cocktails. We will head back to Brown's River under a beautiful full moon and dock at 9:30. Tickets are $30.00 pp which includes the cruise only. Cocktails at the Snapper are on your own. You are allowed to bring some snacks in a cooler on the ferry (no alcohol). Cruisers will park at the Sayville Ferry freight parking lot free of charge. Please send checks made payable to the Bayport Blue Point Heritage Association and an old-fashioned hand written note with the names of those sailing, phone and email addresses and the correct total on the check. Library table

Meadow Croft and the BBPHA are the lucky recipients of an antique library table that was donated back to Meadow Croft by Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Jeffries. Mr. Jeffries is the grandson of Jean Roosevelt, daughter of John Ellis Roosevelt. Mr. Jeffries shared that the table was owned by his grandmother and it was originally placed in the foyer of the historic estate. The BBPHA will be bringing the library table into the ladies parlor for all to see and enjoy. Stop by and see the latest piece of history from this era.

Bayport Blue Point HS Scholarship Winner

Every year the BBPHA proudly offers a $1000.00 scholarship to a graduating senior who is pursuing a career in History. This year's recipient is Kevin Dean! Kevin is heading to Oneonta University to study History Education in the fall. We wish Kevin the best of luck in his chosen career path.

Camp Tabat display

On June 22nd, the BBPHA hosted an informal discussion and a grand display of memorabilia from the local camp know as Camp Tabat. Jen Economos, one of our Board members asked her Aunt Linda Tabat to share the historical artifacts in a display at Meadow Croft. The Tabat family and friends came out to support this endeavor and a photo of the family can be found below.
Camp Tabat was a summer day camp located on Boylan Lane in Blue Point on the Great South Bay. It started in 1947 and children from 3 years and up joined in on the many activities both on land and sea! Today people have many fond memories of Camp Tabat a part of our local history! Come to Meadow Croft on Saturday's or Sunday's from 2:00-4:00 to take a tour of Meadow Croft and see this amazing display! Thanks Jen and Aunt Linda for sharing.

Historic House Tour

It is never too early to start planning our annual Historic House Tour held in October each year! This is a wonderful opportunity to view some magnificent, historical, unusual or architectural significant homes in the Bayport Blue Point community. It is also a huge undertaking and our biggest fundraiser so we can continue to provide free activities to our communities and upkeep of the Meadow Croft Estate.
