November: Travel with Ben Franklin

Bruce Kagan, will bring his program ”In The Footsteps Of Ben;
The Benjamin Franklin Milestone Markers", to our November meeting (Nov. 17th, 3:30pm).

In 1775 Benjamin Franklin was appointed Post Master General of the Northern Colonies by the King of England. He developed the “post road” in order to make the delivery of mail more efficient.  The Boston Post Road was created on the Connecticut shore and he created our little known post road on the north shore of eastern Long Island. 

The Long Island road extends thirty miles from Riverhead to Orient Point. In this digital presentation, travel the roads of modern day eastern Long Island by bicycle, tracing Franklin‟s post road, locating many of the remaining markers that sit quietly by the side of the road waiting to tell their story. Travel “In The Footsteps of Ben” and discover this little-known eastern Long Island treasure! 

Annual Christmas Event

and invite all your friends to the annual Christmas celebration at Meadow Croft. 

This year’s theme is Christmas at the Bay. 

As always the house will be decorated for Christmas and St. Nick is sure to be there!

Christmas committee volunteers are needed:  There will be only two planning meetings for Christmas at Meadow Croft, Christmas at the Bay, 

Saturday, October 5 and Saturday, November 2 at 9:30 AM at Meadow Croft.

The Bayport Heritage Association and the Suffolk County Department of Parks invite the public to their annual Christmas at Meadow Croft event.

Meadow Croft is the 1891 estate of John E. Roosevelt and family. The house will be decorated in a Victorian/Edwardian motif with beautiful wreathes, poinsettias and greenery, magnificently reminiscent of a hundred years ago, reflecting the theme of “Christmas by the Bay.”

·      Musical selections will be played on the original Roosevelt grand piano filling the house with seasonal music.

·      Upstairs, special exhibits, including electric trains, dolls, vintage clothing, woodcarvings, Christmas specialties, and the “Seasonal Fun at Meadow Croft, 1910” will be on display for public enjoyment.

·      Hot chocolate and cookies will add to the coziness of the occasion.

·      St. Nicholas, the Dutch version of Santa Claus, will be there to look up individual children’s names in his ledger. He’ll check to see who’s been ‘naughty and nice’ in 2013.

·      All decorations will be raffled off.

Bus Tour was a Success

This year's docent bus trip was a great success! It included a tour of lower Manhattan, from 9^th Ave. to the East River, and the Tenement Museum. 

The Park Avenue Armory was amazing with its extensive  and elaborate restoration, which included the original early works of Tiffany.

This trip alone is a good reason to become a docent.  Volunteers are always needed.

It requires very little time, less than 2 hours a day two days a month, June through October.

October's Meeting, 2013

Steven Jones of the L.I. Maritime Museum will present an overview of the museum’s buildings, exhibits and events.  

Please note: this meeting will be held Saturday evening October 19, at 7:00 PM in the Bayport-Blue Point Library Community Room.
